ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES begin on September 12, 2010
Theme- "Fear Not"
Seems to be a lot to fear these days- just watch the nightly news, listen to conversation at the coffeehouse, spend sleepless nights, or just feel it within your body. Get an antidote for fear this year by trying out some class offerings on Sunday mornings at Trinity. Below, you’ll find a listing of courses along with a brief description and location. Class time is 9:40-10:30 a.m. No fear- if you’re a newcomer or “old-comer- all are welcome and encouraged to participate as a community of faith. Rid the “fear” and live!
Adult Bible Study-The Present Word- Co-teachers, Rev. David Endriss and Owen Duncan, every Sunday, held in west half of Fellowship Hall (note change of location)
Explore the inescapable God and come to a deeper understanding of what it meets to be a beloved child of God. Exodus and Psalms will be the primary books examined which convey that God reveals, God sustains and God protects. A study book is provided for each class member.
Jesus, The Bible, and Homosexuality- Teacher- Maurice Dyer, Sept. 12- November 7, held in southwest room of PATH, Study book by Jack Rogers (Rev. Dave Endriss’ philosophy teacher) recommended. (Sign- up sheet in east entryway)
Same sex marriage and ordination standards are two of the most controversial issues facing the Presbyterian Church (USA) in today’s changing world. With emotions running high discussions are heated. As a result some congregations have left the denomination with others threatening to follow suit. How does the church provide pastoral ministry to all people when we find it difficult to talk to one another.
Jack Rogers, Presbyterian pastor, scholar, and former moderator of the General Assembly, talks about his personal struggles with these issues in his book, Jesus, the Bible and Homosexuality. He examines scripture, the confessions, and the Presbyterian constitution looking to explode various myths in order to heal the church. Join in a discussion of his journey as we look to better understand both sides of the issues with respect for one another, by listening without judgment and with mutual forbearance we, too, can heal the church.
The Ten Commandments- The First Five, Facilitator- Sinikka Waugh, Sept. 12- November 28th, held in adult room in the lower level of PATH (handicap accessibility using the elevator at the south end of PATH)
This class explores the Ten Commandments (the last time you probably even thought of the 10 Commandments was as a child!) and invites viewers to consider the other people with them on life's road. What with making idols, remembering the Sabbath, and honoring parents, each driver ends up steering himself down a path that ultimately leads to a choice – to follow God's road or his own? The DVD (same contemporary series as “Fork in the Road” and “Mirror Image” taught last year) includes five 10-minute episodes as well as reflection with questions. Episodes include: - 1. No Gods, Only Me (Acts 17:16-34) - 2. Who Do You Worship? (Exodus 32:1-24) - 3. No Wrongful Use of the Lord's Name (Mark 11:14-17; John 2:14-16) - 4. Don't Work Your Life Away (Genesis 1; 2:1-4) - 5. Honor Your Father and Mother (Ephesians 6:1-3; Proverbs 23:22-25). The Ten Commandments are not a multiple choice!

WISDOM KEEPERS
The purpose of this new ministry, under the umbrella of Christian Education, is:
1. To encourage older adults in the use of their skills in the church's minstry and outreach
2. To bring about a better understanding and awareness of the needs and the skills of older adults.
3. To nurture spiritual growth throughout each person's life.
4. Together with other groups in the church, reach out to those isolated by illness, or the loss of a family member.
5. Enrich relationships and encourage respect for all ages.
The Wisdom Keeper planning team is: Geri Bartlett, Kathie Farris, Jeanenne Glascock, Sue Kimball, Renee Little, Susan Tinder, and Jon Vernon. The team has issued a survey of adults 55+ this past year and is using that information to determine the needs and the talents that can be used in planning for the future. The team meets once a month and has assembled a large amount of resources, lists of possibilities for the ministry and you will begin to see a greater awareness of the value of people in this age group. An all-day planning session will take place at Sue Kimball's home in June. If you have questions or would like to be a part of the planning team, please contact Sue Kimball at 961-2493.
HEALTH MINISTRY TASK FORCE-
This group has been meeting, as an outgrowth of Wisdom Keepers, to explore whether Trinity could benefit from a health ministry. Members of this task force are: Susan Tinder, facilitator, Shelley DeLong, Ellie Hutchison, Sue Kimball, Renee Little, Dru McLuen, Carol Shaw, and Al Wood. They have interviewed parish nurses in the area, and are developing a mission statement and a proposal for Session. Watch for the outcome in the future.
